June 6, 2024 – British journalist and broadcaster Michael Mosley has spoken openly about his personal struggle with depression. In a candid interview, the 66-year-old discussed his long journey with mental illness. He revealed he has been fighting depression for over 20 years.
Mosley first experienced symptoms of depression in his early 40s. He said it started with feelings of sadness and hopelessness. He found himself losing interest and motivation in things he used to enjoy. Simple daily tasks became complex challenges.
“I just felt so incredibly low and drained of all energy and joy,” Mosley explained. “Getting out of bed in the morning was a massive effort.” He described his depressive episodes as “the greyness descending like a heavy fog.”
Mosley’s depression severely impacted his work and relationships. There were times he had to take leave from his broadcasting job. His wife and children also struggled as they watched him suffer.
For years, Mosley did not seek professional help. He was in denial and hoped it would go away on its own. When it persisted, he finally decided to see a doctor.
Mosley tried various treatments, including therapy, medication, and lifestyle changes. Some provided temporary relief, but the depression always returned. He hit rock bottom a few years ago in what he calls his “darkest period.”
That low point prompted Mosley to try something different – transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) therapy. TMS uses magnetic pulses to stimulate nerve cells in the brain linked to depression and mood regulation.
Mosley said TMS was “life-changing” and allowed him to get his severe depression under control. However, he still has moderate symptoms that require ongoing management.
“Depression is not something you’re simply cured of,” Mosley stated. “It’s a constant battle and journey of ups and downs. But I’m doing so much better at keeping the darkness at bay.”
In addition to continuing TMS treatments, Mosley follows a comprehensive plan. This includes exercise, healthy eating, sufficient sleep, cognitive behavioral therapy, and mindfulness practices.
“I’ve learned so much about taking care of myself – mind, body and spirit,” he said. “It’s made me stronger and more resilient in managing this insidious condition.”
Mosley feels sharing his personal depression story is essential. He wants to raise awareness, educate the public, and fight mental illness stigma.
“Depression is not a sign of weakness or something to be ashamed of,” Mosley declared. “It’s a real medical issue just like any other illness. The more we talk about it openly, the better.”
He also has a message of hope for those currently suffering from depression. “You may feel hopeless, but there is hope and help available. Don’t give up. Take it step-by-step and day-by-day. You can get through this and live a full life again.”
