Scottie Scheffler, the world’s top-ranked golfer, was arrested on the morning of May 17, 2024, at the entrance of the Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky. The incident occurred as he was heading to compete in the second round of the PGA Championship.
The trouble began early Friday morning when Scheffler tried to enter the golf course. Police had set up a traffic barricade due to a fatal accident that occurred nearby, involving a pedestrian struck by a shuttle bus. This caused significant traffic delays and altered the regular entry routes to the club.
According to police reports, Scheffler did not comply with the officers’ traffic instructions at the scene. An officer alleged that Scheffler attempted to drive through the restricted area and, in doing so, dragged the officer a short distance with his vehicle. The officer, Detective Bryan Gillis, suffered minor injuries and was treated at a hospital for pain and swelling in his wrist and knee.
Scheffler was immediately detained and charged with four counts: one felony count of second-degree assault of a police officer and three misdemeanors, including reckless driving, criminal mischief, and disregarding police signals. He was booked at the Louisville Metropolitan Department of Corrections and released after about an hour .
Scheffler’s attorney, Steve Romines, stated that the golfer believed he was following directions from another officer and that there was a misunderstanding. Scheffler was driving a marked player’s vehicle with visible credentials and stopped immediately when directed. Romines emphasized that Scheffler did not intend to disregard any instructions and did not deliberately assault the officer.
In a statement on Instagram, Scheffler expressed his regret over the incident. He acknowledged the chaos at the scene due to the earlier accident and mentioned that he never intended to ignore the police’s directions. He also extended his condolences to the family of the deceased pedestrian, a worker for one of the tournament’s vendors.
Despite the incident, Scheffler was able to participate in the tournament later that day. He finished the second round with a score of 5-under par, showing remarkable composure amidst the controversy. The PGA Championship organizers delayed the start of the second round to accommodate the investigations related to the fatal accident.
The case is scheduled for arraignment next Tuesday, where Scheffler plans to plead not guilty. The investigation is ongoing, and both the police and Scheffler’s team are cooperating fully to resolve the matter.
Who is Scottie Scheffler’s lawyer?
Scottie Scheffler had a lawyer named Steven Romines. Romines helped Scheffler with a legal problem earlier this year. There was an incident with the police. The charges against Scheffler were dropped in May 2024. Romines spoke to the media for Scheffler. He said Scheffler wanted to move forward.
