Former Collingwood defender Nathan Murphy, who retired from AFL due to concussion concerns, might be set for a surprise return to the sporting world – but this time on the cricket pitch.
Murphy, a talented athlete in his youth, excelled at both cricket and football. He represented Australia at the under-16 level in cricket and played underage cricket for Victoria before pursuing a career in AFL. Drafted by Collingwood in 2017, Murphy’s promising AFL career was cut short after suffering multiple concussions.
While his AFL journey ended abruptly, Murphy’s comments suggest a possible return to cricket. “I might return to my other sporting pursuit,” he quipped, jokingly claiming he aspires to be a “premiership winner and Boxing Day Test opener for Australia.”
Whether Murphy’s cricket ambitions are serious or lighthearted banter remains to be seen. However, his talent and past achievements suggest he could be a valuable addition to any domestic cricket team. It will be interesting to see if the former AFL player decides to take a shot at cricketing glory.
A Difficult Journey
Murphy’s retirement from the Australian Football League (AFL) has been long and arduous. On Tuesday morning, while addressing the press, he acknowledged that the club had been fantastic throughout the entire process and had given him ample time to make this decision.
He revealed that the past few months had been quite challenging, but based on doctors’ advice, he had decided to retire, as they are the experts. Murphy emphasized that there is still much to learn in this field, so it is essential to trust the specialists.
Trying to Adapt, but Doctors’ Advice Prevailed
During the press conference with his close friend and business partner Jordan Roughead, Murphy disclosed that he had attempted to modify his ball-handling style during the pre-season training to avoid injury. However, ultimately, the decision was left to the doctors.
Murphy stated that he and Roughead had tried to change a few things, but in the end, the doctors made the final call. While he was pleased that he had tried, he was unfortunate to have to retire.
A Cricket Background and Future Aspirations
Murphy had previously played cricket for Australia at the Under-16 level in 2016 and represented Victoria in underage cricket. He pursued a football career after being selected at number 39 in the 2017 draft.
A former student at Brighton Grammar School, Murphy’s childhood dream was to play Test cricket for Australia and win a premiership in the AFL. Jokingly, he mentioned that he might consider a comeback in cricket now that his football career has ended.
Future Plans and Support from the Club
Murphy revealed that he is contemplating his next steps, although Roughead would like him to work at their cafe, “Whiplash,” which they run together with Collingwood forward Brodie Mihocek and former player Callum Brown.
Collingwood’s CEO Craig Kelly and Head of Football Brendon Bolton have stated that the club will fully support Murphy during this challenging time and may offer him coaching or administrative roles in the future.
A Courageous Defender’s Farewell
After Brandan (Melbourne), Murphy is the second player to retire this year due to concussion issues. This courageous defender ends his 57-match career with a premiership medal.
